Hi Dwing, How about writing your own heavily improved/optimised version of the PAQAR engine and adding it to WinUDA? Malcolm Taylor has done something similar with his experimental PWCM (PAQ Weighted Context Model) plugin for WinRK. www.msoftware.co.nz/

Hello, I'm Dwing.
My first purpose of developing UDA was challenger with UHARC. Then I got PAQ6. But I was not content with its speed. So I optimized it and made a friendly interface and useful functions though the speed optimization is not very prominence.
In fact, I don't want to make a compresser which has best compression ratio. UDA's best compression ratio is even not better than PAQ6. Because some modes of PAQ6 need MUCH memory and time which is not actual. So are PAQAR and WinRK. I only want good balance between compression ratio and speed.
Now I am content with WinUDA's compression ratio, and it really overcomes UHARC even using mode-0. In present PAQAR is used only for experiment and no one will use it for application, and is not my idea.
I hope you will test WinRK with PWCM. Good luck!
PS: Could you tell me that what's the bug which was encountered when you tested WinRK.

I have some other to say:
From all of your test, in my opinion, only tests of ROMs, Steam, C++, Text are useful for most place. And they are also UDA's superiority.
PNG and MP3 are compressed, the result of test has much random.
BMP can be converted to PNG or JPG. And most image-software can open PNG and JPG.
WAV can be converted to MP3, WMA or OGG. And almost no one can differentiate them. WAV also can be convert to some lossless compressed formats which have good optimization of sample data.
EXE and DLL can be packed with data-compression, and are used normally. (I just made a packer called "Upack" these days which has the best compression ratio of all exepackers). But some programs can't be packed while they are some exceptions.
What I said is only for actuality. I had also made a little compression test on my site which have other filetype such as DOC, XLS, PPT, HTM, MHT. They are compressable and very useful everyday. Some database files and PDF files are also need compressing which need backup frequently in commerce.
I like your steam test which is most actual and fair.

I hope you will test WinRK with PWCM. Good luck! PS: Could you tell me that what's the bug which was encountered when you tested WinRK. Hey I asked you in my email to answer the question. It's in the other thread, 'update of gui'. I'm DOGG not Pilskin The question was: "Would it be possible to add a custom model-size? Currently mode-3 is 194 MB. If you added an option to add a custom value, i believe it would improve compression. Personally i would use 400MB." You say above that you are after a good speed:compression ratio. That's OK but some people don't really care about speed. I do believe however, that people will use the archiver which doesn't use much memory, compresses good, and has good speed, which is why i think WinACE and WinRAR are so popular. WinRK simply crashes (some memory issue) while compressing. I'm working with the author to fix the issues. I tried PWCM but WinRK simply disappears (no error messages) in some tests. So i'm waiting until the issues are fixed.

Some database files and PDF files are also need compressing which need backup frequently in commerce. I like your steam test which is most actual and fair. Yeah i agree that the steam test is the most practical as it contains various datatypes, what people are most likely to encounter. The reason i test BMP is to see how good the various archivers are at compressing a raw image. Also, i test things like MP3 and PGN to see how good they are at compressing already compressed and optimised data. While i know that there are programs specifically made for lossless compression of data such as WAV, they are usually command line based and have no GUI. So i test what is practical for most people, which is using a single common archiver for compressing a variety of data. I may add other tests in the future, however probably not too soon as it takes alot of time to compress 7,364,289,932 bytes. Especially for something like WinRK (ROLZ, PPMD, PPMZ, PWCM). That's 29,457,159,728 bytes for just one program, and WinRK does take a great deal of time.

Hi Guys I'm Berto EMILCONT Destasio I've worked with Matt Mahoney to improve PAQ You know Winuda is a PAQ clone..... Why don't you test Emilcont v02.xx? ? It is faster than Winuda and Better than Winuda Try it and let me know!!! Bye Emilcont

Hi Berto,
I have already tested Emilcont v02xx and all earlier releases. I have not yet encountered the bug that has been troubling Werner with his tests, even though I have tried Emilcont v02xx with many different file types. I'm looking forward to testing Emilcont v03 with its greatly improved compression.
Please release it soon!!!

To compress a 531KB DOC file: UHARC (mx): 1.0 sec WinUDA (mode-0/1/2/3): 5/7/10/15 sec Emilcont v02.xx(0-3/4-5): 22/34 sec (Test on AthlonXP1600+/384MB)
